Can Cats Eat Vegemite?

Can Cats Eat Vegemite?

Vegemite is a black-coloured spread consisting of brewer’s yeast, salt, malt extract, and vegetable extract. It is known for being packed with B vitamins such as thiamine, niacin, riboflavin, and folate.

Though a lick of vegemite may not be harmful for your cat, the amount of salt found in the spread will not be good for her. Cats who eat large quantities of food high in salt may suffer from these symptoms: vomiting, diarrhea, decreased appetite, lethargy, incoordination, and excessive thirst or urination. Some cats may even have tremors, seizures, or fall into a coma in extreme cases.

What to do if your cat accidentally eats vegemite: Observe your cat’s mood, behaviour, eating, drinking, and litter box habits. If anything changes, contact your veterinarian immediately.

In summary: Some cat owners use vegemite as a training reward. If you plan on giving it to your cat as a treat, make sure to get your veterinarian’s consent and find out how much she can safely eat.
