Can Cats Eat Celery?

Yes, cats can eat celery but only in moderation.

As obligate carnivores, cats need a substantial amount of animal-derived meat to function properly. However, they can eat vegetables such as celery as a snack. Celery is a green-coloured vegetable that belongs to the Apiaceae family (the same family as carrots). The celery leaves, crunchy stalk, and seeds are all safe for cats to eat in small quantities. Some cats even react to celery leaves in the same way as catnip. When consumed by your cat, this low-calorie vegetable can benefit her digestive and cardiovascular systems and may prevent diseases because of the antioxidants found in it.

How to feed celery to your cat: Thoroughly wash the vegetable to remove chemicals found on it. Chop the stalk into small pieces to prevent choking or blockage.

Be wary of feeding your cat too much celery since it may cause stomach pain, indigestion, bloating, vomiting, and/or diarrhea.

Here are three ideas for celery treats your cat will love:

  1. This DIY recipe consists of celery stalks, sunflower oil, and basil.
  2. Give a piece of this crunchy treat after a grooming session at home.
  3. Try this homemade chicken soup that’s purr-fect for cats!

In summary: Potassium, iron, folate, magnesium, and vitamins A, K, and C are just some of the nutrients found in celery. When feeding celery to your cat, make sure it does not go beyond the recommended 10% of her total daily intake. Consult with your veterinarian and make her try a tiny portion first to see how her body reacts to it.
